Angola

Angola is located in the southern part of Africa with a total area of 1,246,700 sq km. It is the 7th largest country in African continent. The country has a coastline of 1600km and is bordered by Namibia and Democratic Republic of the Congo. Angola is divided into eighteen provinces which are : Bengo, Benguela, Bie, Cabinda, Cuando, Cuanza Norte, Cuanza Sul, Cunene, Humbo, Huila, Lunda Sul, Malanje, Moxico, Namibie, Uige and Zaire.Angola was ruled by Portuguese rulers  from the 16th century to 1975. After independence, Angola saw an intense civil war from 1975 to 2002.

Angola's oil sector is booming because of the high international oil pricing. The economy has a high growth rate because of this sector. It contributes to about 85% to the GDP .The increased oil production is supported by the growth averaging more than 15% every year from 2004 to 2007.Angola became a member of OPEC in 2006 and in 2007 was assigned a production quota of 1.9 million barrels a day, this though was somewhat less than the 2-2.5 million bbl Angola's government had wanted.

The other prominent sector of Angola is the diamond mining sector. Angola aims to be the 3rd largest diamond producer by the end of 2010.At present it is believed that Angola is only exploiting 40% of the total potential in the diamond sector. With the production concentrated in the northeastern provinces.

Though Angola at present is prospering because of the oil sector but to take full advantage of its rich national resources - gold, diamonds, extensive forests, Atlantic fisheries, Angola will need to implement government reforms, increase transparency, and reduce corruption. The corruption, especially in the extractive sectors and the negative effects of large inflows of foreign exchange, are major challenges facing Angola.
