Agriculture sector is backbone of the economy, contributes to 32.2% of GDP and employs 80% of the work force. The principal crops are cotton, groundnuts (peanuts), sorghum, millet, wheat, gum arabic, sugarcane, cassava (tapioca), mangos, papaya, bananas, sweet potatoes and sesame. Even though agriculture is the mainstay of the economy but still most farms remain rain-fed and susceptible to drought. The instability in the economy, adverse weather and weak world agricultural prices, ensures that most of the people remain at or below the poverty line.

Oil is the main product of export of Sudan. The economy gained dramatically in 2008 due to the increase in oil prices and large amount of inflow of FDI. Sudan has 5Bn bbls of proven oil reserves and had exported 480,000 bbl/d in 2008. The majority of reserves are located in the southern part at the Muglad and Melut basins.
