INDIA : India’s Trade with the African Region notched US$ 38.96 Billion in the year 2009-10 (DGCI&S provisional figures) constituting 8.37% share in India’s total trade. Trade with the region has grown at a CAGR of 18.10% from US$ 4.48 Billion in 1996-97.
AFRICA : 54 Countries, 1 billion people, US$ 1.01 Billion of trade. Imports worth US$ 468 billion include Mineral Fuels, Oils, Machinery, Vehicles including Boats, Ships, Aircrafts, Electronics & Electricals, Iron & Steel & Articles thereof, Cereals, Plastics, Pharmaceuticals, etc.

Trade Promotion Assistance Offered by DOC,MOC&I & GOI

The Focus Africa Programme is an initiative for addressing the imperative to expand India’s trade with the African Region. India has diplomatic relations with many of the other African countries thus the programme extends almost to the entire African continent. These countries provide vast and untapped potential for India to exploit. India’s traditional ties with the countries in Africa, the presence of a sizable community of the Indian origin there, geographical proximity and resulting logistic advantage, an atmosphere of general and political goodwill as also cultural links, together provide a fertile ground for India to enhance its trade with the region.

Market Development Assistance (MDA):

The Department of Commerce, India through its initiative of Market Development Assistance (MDA) provides various measures to stimulate and diversify India’s export trade. Under this scheme, assistance is provided to exporters for export promotion activities abroad. Assistance is provided to Export Promotion Councils to undertake export promotional activities for their commodities. Assistance is approved by nodal organizations and trade bodies for undertaking exclusive nonrecurring innovative export promotion efforts by their members. The scheme helps in carrying out activities connected to the market promotion efforts abroad and to assist Focus export promotion programmes in specific regions like Focus Africa, Focus LAC, Focus CIS and Focus ASEAN programmes.

Market Access Initiative (MAI):

In the 10th five year plan (2002 - 2007) a scheme, MAI or Market Access Initiative was introduced. The scheme was envisaged to act as a catalyst to promote India’s exports on a sustained basis. The scheme is formulated on focus product-focus country approach to evolve specific strategy for specific market and specific product through market studies/survey. Assistance would be provided to Export Promotion Organizations/Trade Promotion Organizations /Exporters etc.
